Tucson’s GROWDOWN!

growdown-logo_lowres_color

Join us this Sunday for GROWDOWN! The Great Tucson Garden Design Challenge at the Tucson Botanical Gardens.

Four local landscape designers will go trowel to trowel in a three-day competition to transform an empty 15’ x 20’ plot at TBG into “the best” Tucson pocket garden. This year’s theme is Small Gardens, Big Ideas, and the emphasis will be on creating a small, inviting usable garden that would thrive under local desert conditions at a home with limited yard space.

The Live Outside Team will be present on the final day of the event on Sunday, March 24th to cover the judging and awards luncheon. The following week we will write blog features that highlight the designers, including photographs of the pocket garden competition.

The gardens will remain on display at Tucson Botanical Gardens through May 2013 (tentative, depending on upcoming construction projects).

YARN BOMBING

Random displays of creativity are ever-present in the street art world. Graffiti has evolved into large painted murals and stenciled images plastered onto the sides of buildings, streets and bridges. The trend of displaying art in unusual, unsanctioned public places is transforming and growing.

It seems that even average people want to seed bomb an old empty lot or slap stickers of their political beliefs onto the side of parking meters and mailboxes. In the last 8 years a new form of street art has taken hold- yarn bombing.

I went to Dwell on Design with one thing in mind: interview as many designers as possible. I don’t even know what I was doing but I somehow I accessed a press pass as a blogger. Before this day, I’ve never officially “press”ed anything in my life… not even a pair of jeans.

Travel Destination: Park Güell

In this economy, it’s hard to find time to travel anywhere, let alone internationally. However, if you do come across the funding and time to travel, Barcelona is a beautiful place to visit. Whether you’re looking for relaxation, a romantic getaway, a place to learn, or just a good time, you absolutely can not go wrong with this wonderful city. The weather is beautiful, the flowers are bright, and the culture is thriving. For those who like the great outdoors, you can visit the beach, go for a hike, or visit their large outdoor market, la Boqueria. For those of you who enjoy the culture, you can visit the many museums, taste the local Cava, or walk around the city to find some of the most beautiful and original architecture of all time by Antoni Gaudí. Alright, you get the picture. We love España! However, the one must-do item on our list of things we love is visit Park Güell – the perfect combination of culture and the great outdoors.

How to Make a Moodboard

Thinking of redecorating or starting fresh? Before you start going wild with the paint and projects, you should take a look at creating a moodboard! What exactly is a moodboard, you ask? Some people may refer to it as a compilation of everything inspirational for a design or project, however I consider it more of a “directional” board as it guides me through the products and colors that I want for each project.  I love making these moodboards to present ideas to clients and of course for my own entertainment, since I’m a bit of a design freak. For anyone who relies heavily on visual stimulation, a moodboard is perfect for you. You can use it to design landscapes, the interior of your home, specific fashion styles, or personal goals.

Summer Outdoor Cocktails

Summer Drinks

I always say the best way to entertain a crowd is to provide a great space, great company, and great drinks. Not to say you can’t have fun without alcohol, but it can definitely add that little je ne sais quoi to any event. And who’s to say it can’t be fun while centered around a conversation? Inspired by our hot Arizona summer, here are some of the best drinks to entertain outdoors…
